Hidden Gem #40: Rakkatak – Small Pieces

Rakkatak - Small PiecesRakkatak merges rhythms and melodies influenced by classical Indian music with a pop music aesthetic. Rakkatak is Anita Katakkar‘s solo project, initiated out of her need to highlight and share the subtle beauty of tabla in a non-traditional way.

Having lived in multicultural Toronto all her life, Anita’s diverse taste in music ranging from folk to rock to electronica is reflected in her work. She created her first self-titled album in studio and from there paired with bassist Oriana Barbato to co-produce Rakkatak’s EP Open and now, Small Pieces.

Featuring: tabla player Anita Katakkar, bassist Oriana Barbato, sitarist Rex Van der Spuy, setar player Sina Sin and violin player Jessica Deutsch this band’s multi-faceted creativity and eclectic musicianship combust on stage to create a unique, coloured and intoxicating vibe.
